Ducted or Ductless?

A central ducted heat pump uses one indoor air handler and your existing duct system. A ductless mini-split heat pump uses wall-mounted indoor units and no ducts at all. Both are heat pumps and we service both, but they fail in different ways and are quoted differently. If your system has indoor heads on the wall, start at our ductless mini-split services instead.

Why a Heat Pump Blows Cold Air

It is the single most common call we take in winter, and it has several possible causes:

  • The system is in defrost
    Normal, temporary, and it should clear on its own within a few minutes. If it never clears, the defrost control needs attention.
  • The reversing valve is not switching
    The system stays in cooling mode even though the thermostat is calling for heat.
  • Low refrigerant charge
    Capacity drops off long before the system stops running altogether.
  • Auxiliary heat is not engaging
    On the coldest mornings the backup stage is supposed to carry part of the load. When it does not, the house never catches up.

Worth knowing: a heat pump delivers supply air cooler than a gas furnace does even when it is working correctly, so lukewarm air at the register is not automatically a fault.

About Heat Pump Service

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in winter?

The most common causes are a system stuck in defrost, a reversing valve that is not switching into heat mode, low refrigerant charge, or auxiliary heat that is not engaging when it should. A heat pump also delivers air cooler than a furnace does by design, so air that feels lukewarm at the register is not always a fault. We diagnose which of those it is rather than guessing.

Do you service both ducted heat pumps and ductless mini-splits?

Yes. We repair central ducted heat pumps and ductless mini-split heat pumps. This section covers ducted split systems; if your system has wall-mounted indoor units and no ductwork, our ductless mini-split pages are the better starting point.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

Once a year at minimum. A heat pump runs in both the heating and the cooling season, so it accumulates far more operating hours than a cooling-only system and benefits more from regular attention. Change the filter every one to three months between visits.
