What is a ductless mini-split and when does it make sense?

A ductless mini-split pairs an outdoor unit with one or more wall-mounted indoor heads connected by a refrigerant line set instead of ductwork. Because there are no ducts there is no duct loss, and every head holds its own temperature. It is usually the answer for a room the central system never conditioned properly, or for a space that has no duct running to it at all.

How many indoor units can run from one outdoor unit?

It depends on the outdoor unit you choose. The Daikin MXS multi-zone systems we install are configured for two, three, four or five zones from a single outdoor unit. We size the outdoor unit to the total load of the rooms you want covered.

Do you repair mini-splits from other brands?

Yes. Our technicians are specialized in ductless technology and work with all major mini-split brands for repair and maintenance, not only the Daikin systems we install.

Do ductless systems need maintenance too?

They do, and arguably more visibly than a ducted system, because the indoor head sits in the room with you. Filters, blower wheel and coil all need periodic cleaning to keep both airflow and indoor air quality where they should be. Multi-zone systems have several indoor units, so there is simply more to keep clean.

If the building already has usable ductwork, compare ductless against a ducted heat pump or central air conditioning before deciding. Ductless is the better tool for problem rooms; ducted is usually the better tool for a whole house that already has the duct in place.
